IT is possible to accuse the government of Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, the current governor of Niger State, of the crime of witch hunting its predecessor with the setting up of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the activities of the past government. This is because to the best of our knowledge, it is the only government that has instituted this kind of a full-fledged inquiry into the activities of the preceding government in spite of the fact that many of the new governors upon assumption of office in May 2007 accused their predecessors of leaving empty treasuries. It would stand to reason that if the other complaining governors have not seen the sense in inquiring into the past in their states in order to unearth the reason(s) for the empty treasuries and have chosen to continue with governance, the Aliyu government must be engaged in more than the necessary business of government for it to be interested in inquiring into the past in Niger State. And what other thing could be more than the normal, regular business of government than the desire to discredit its predecessor, hence the tag of witch hunting!
The Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, has urged Nigerians to imbibe the culture of religious tolerance as a panacea for unity.
