HIV/AIDS may hamper development in Niger, DG raises alarm
The Director General of the Niger State HIV/AIDS control agency, Pharmacist Baba Umar, has described the high rate of HIV/AIDS prevalence in the state as alarming and warned that unless urgent steps were taken to curb the spread of the disease, the government’s plan of transforming the state into one of the three leading economies in Nigeria by the year 2020 would not be realized. Pharmacist Umar who stated this in a chat with Nigeria Newsday in his office, in Minna, the Niger state capital last week, said over 250,000 people in Niger State, representing 5.3 per cent of the population, were infected with the dreaded HIV/AIDS disease.

Gov Babangida Aliyu of Niger State has ordered the probe of 138 principals of secondary schools over alleged collection of illegal fees. Aliyu: Stirring A Fresh HIV/AIDS Test Controversy
It was at a Christmas/Sallah celebration organized by the Niger State government for HIV/AIDS orphaned and vulnerable children in Minna the Niger state capital. The event was well attended by commissioners, special advisers and other top government functionaries. Everything had been going on smoothly as the government officials were having a great time feting the children. The celebration was soon dampened when the Governor, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu stood up to make his speech and he personally volunteered to go for HIV/AIDS screening and also ordered his commissioners and other aides present to follow suit.
