NIGER/KWARA SHARED ASSETS: GOV ALIYU SETS UP COMMITTEE

The Chief Servant and Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has inaugurated a five-man committee to investigate the state and status of some of the assets given to Niger State when Borgu Local Government Area was merged with the State from the former Kwara State.

Governor Aliyu said the committee should look into the circumstances that led to the “disappearance of the assets as well as the personalities that played any role in the issue” adding that the committee is also mandated to uncover cases where and how the properties were disposed of. He also charged the committee to make adequate recommendations to the government on each item ceded to the State.

Dr. Aliyu pointed out that the government inherited a collapsed system of administration where records in the civil service were not properly maintained, saying that, even though the challenges are enormous, he is determined to restore sanity and accountability in the system.

The Governor then urged the committee to invite whoever has useful information to give to the committee, no matter how highly placed he or she is, either from within or outside the government.

The committee which has two weeks to submit its report to the government has the Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Adamu Aliyu Mohammed as the Chairman while the State Director of Public Prosecution (Ministry of Justice), Barrister Musa Abdul will serve as Secretary. Other members are Barrister Danlami Baba, Director General (Intergovernmental Relations), Mr. Philip Thomas (Director, Lands) and Col. A.A. Babangida (rtd), Senior Special Assistant on Security.
