NGSG TO ASSIST RIVER BASIN AUTHORITY
The Chief Servant and Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has given assurance to render maximum assistance to the Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority to add value to the development of agriculture in the State.
Governor Aliyu gave the assurance while jointly receiving the Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority, Minna as well as the Development Research and Project Centre, Kano in a courtesy call at the Government House, Minna.
The Chief Servant directed the State Ministry of Agriculture to closely work with the authority and produce an action plan with a view to exploiting areas of co-operation for the effective development of agriculture, access the funds available at both the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Fedeal Ministry of Agriculture for the development of irrigation dams in the State.
He said it is important to work out a plan of action and set a target on the development of irrigation farming, stressing the need for the completion of the irrigation dams scattered across the State for the benefit of the host communities and the State in general.
In another development, Governor Aliyu has reiterated the determination of the government to continue to give priority attention to the development of quality women population in order to facilitate the over-all development of the State.
The Chief Servant who made the statement while responding to the visit of the Development Research and Project Centre, Kano, stated that it is in recognition of the value of women that the State Government gave much attention to the development of girl-child education as well as maternal health care services.
He said the problems of maternal health care largely depend on the level of ignorance of the people, in addition to some socio-cultural impediments, and called for further sensitization of the people on maternal health care in the State.
Dr. Aliyu then expressed delight with the efforts of the centre in organizing a retreat to sensitize the State Government on maternal and child health services in the State.
Earlier, the Board Chairman of the Upper Niger River Basin Development Authority, Alhaji Abdullahi Waziri Tambuwal said that the visit was to solicit for the State Government’s co-operation and assistance over its various irrigation projects in the State. He specifically called on the government to partner with the authority to complete the construction of Kagara Irrigation Dam which he said has been stalled for 25 years. The Team Leader, Development Research and Project Centre, Kano, Dr. Abdul Qadir Ibrahim informed the Governor that the retreat will examine issues affecting effective maternal health care delivery.
