NGSG WILL NOT CONDONE SABOTEURS
Niger State Government has vowed to deal ruthlessly with any government official who connives to sabotage its laudable programmes.
This warning was issued by the Special Adviser, Economic Matters and Head, Due Process Office, Alhaji Usman Tinau Mohammed in a press briefing at the Government House, Minna.
Alhaji Mohammed stated that as part of its oversight functions, the Due Process Office in the State visited two on-going road projects in Minna to monitor and evaluate the level of implementation, but that, the team was shocked when it discovered that there were alterations on the approved specifications of the road projects.
He said the engineering drawings on Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu Road and Peter Sarki Road which were provided and costed by the State Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure sharply contrasted the level of project implementation discovered at the sites.
The Special Adviser explained that the original drawings include a width of 10 metres of road with an additional 1.6 metres for walkway and drainage, but that, the width was reduced to 7 metres when it was measured, while the walkways and the drainages were not provided at the sites. He explained that the contractor presented a document signed by Engr. Alhassan Aliyu, Director (Civil Engineering) of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructural Development to justify the alterations.
Alhaji Mohammed added that the alterations in job specifications made by the Director were effected on all the five on-going road projects in Minna. He named the roads as Dr. Mu’azu Babangida, Peter Sarki and Maiduguri roads. Others are Baban Mallam and Justice Legbo Kutigi roads. He said when the Due Process Office contacted the Commissioner overseeing the Ministry as well as the Permanent Secretary, both of them said they were ignorant of the changes made by the Director.
He said the government is highly responsive to the yarnings and aspirations of the people and that it will not allow such a shoddy behaviour to characterize the administration, stressing that an investigation is currently going on and that punitive measures will be taken against those found to be involved in the matter.
It would be recalled that Engr. Alhassan Aliyu was placed on an indefinite suspension early this week.
