GOV ALIYU HARPS ON LEGISLATIVE EXECUTIVE HARMONY AT LG LEVELS

The Chief Servant and Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has enjoined legislators in the local government councils to establish a collaborative working environment with their council chairmen to engender overall rapid development of their areas.

Governor Aliyu made the remark at the opening ceremony of a two-day workshop on the application of uniform procedure rules in the local government legislative councils organized for speakers and councilors of all the local government councils in the State held in Minna.

Dr. Aliyu said, as a firm believer in true federalism, the councilors must be empowered with the knowledge to know their roles and to effectively contribute to the development of their communities hence, the relevance of the workshop.

He said politics “requires negotiations, patience, understanding and telling the truth”. He urged them to be proactive in establishing genuine checks and balances in the administration of their councils and shun any attempt to blackmail or unjustifiably threaten their Chairmen with impeachment.

Governor Aliyu also urged the Councilors, Chairmen and all other political office holders to serve the people well, and in so doing to appreciate the fact that they are actually serving God and would be abundantly rewarded here and in the hereafter. He warned them against diverting public funds for personal use.

In his address, the State Commissioner of Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Barrister Abdullahi Bawa, expressed the need for the adoption of a uniform rule of procedure that will be applicable to all local government legislative councils.

He urged all the Councilors to study the rules of procedure for adoption which, according to him, are aimed at enhancing democracy and adherence to the rule of law at the grassroot level, and that of legislative productivity.

The Commissioner stated that the present administration has remained sensitive to the aspiration of the judiciary and obedience of the rule of law adding that it was now time for the legislators to be part of the success story. He expressed the hope that the knowledge acquired during the workshop will spur the councilors to greater productivity in their councils.

In his keynote address, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Adamu Usman said the workshop is timely as the State faces certain critical legal issues which include the statutes of local government as regards the development areas.
