The Chief Servant and Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has accepted the offer to be inducted as a Fellow of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice (SPSP), the umbrella body for all peace workers in the West African Sub-region.

Accepting the offer when members of the Board of Trustees of the Society paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Minna, Governor Aliyu said there was no alternative to peace stressing that it is a pre-requisite for human progress.

Dr. Aliyu said he accepted the fellowship because of the dire need to build more people who really understand the process of peace and the need for harmonous co-existence. He expressed happiness with the activities of the society which not only guide the studies but also to advice in the process of ensuring that peace is maintained in the country.

Speaking earlier, the President of SPSP, Mr. Nurudeen Olarinde congratulated the people of the State over the Chief Servant’s electoral victory at the tribunal as well as the Court of Appeal, stressing that the victory is for Nigerlites who would have been denied the benefit of good governance if the judgement had gone otherwise.

Mr. Olaniran also congratulated the Chief Servant for joining the league of distinguished and eminent Nigerians as a fellow of the Society for Peace Studies and Practice. He disclosed that the investiture of the Governor is scheduled for June 22 – 24, in Kano during the society’s annual conference.

The President stated that the SPSP is a civil society body seeking to integrate peace, scholarship and practice as a way to develop the culture of peace and in the process provide the collaborative spirit for peace practitioners and peace scholars. He said the society has been in partnership with some notable institutions such as the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) and the University of Ilorin amongst others.

He said the investiture of the Chief Servant which is based on merit, will be done along with those of other eminent Nigerians who have also earned this year’s fellowship such as the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Sa’ad Abubakar III, President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Arch-Bishop Onaiyekan and Governor Rotimi Amechi.

Meanwhile, the National Executive Council and the Niger State Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors led by its President, Dr. Wale Okediran also paid a courtesy call on the Chief Servant to remind him about the association’s annual convention scheduled for November this year.

The Chief Servant assured ANA of his unflinching support and also inaugurated the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the convention.

Earlier, the ANA President, Dr. Wale Okediran described Governor Aliyu as a writer-friendly and progressive leader. He also thanked the Chief Servant for the catalogue of support for literature which he said is yet to be surpassed by any arm of government in the country.

Dr. Okediran disclosed that part of ANA’s activities for this year is to organize a colloquium in June this year in honour of one of the icons of Northern Nigerian literature, the late Sir Abubakar Imam and therefore solicited the assistance and support of the Chief Servant in that direction.
