 Nigeria: Bida Old Boys Spend N120 Million to Improve College - Minna — Former students of the Bida Government College, Bida under the Bida Old Students Association (BOSA) have spent a total of N120 million on projects to put basic facilities in the college, president of the association retired Col. Sani Bello has said. Bello made this known Saturday in Bida, Niger State, at a meeting of BOSA members where he stated that the projects executed with the money included the rehabilitation of all the old and the new hostels, blocks of classrooms, rehabilitation and reticulation of the water system in the kitchen and motorized borehole sunk to serve the staff quarters and the school's overhead tank. He said part of the money was spent on procurement and installation of a new power generator..Niger State Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu and a member of BOSA who spoke through his Commissioner for Health Dr Ibrahim Sule promised that his administration would continue to give top priority attention to the education sector to reposition learning in the state. Former military president, retired General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, former Head of State, retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar, retired General Mohammed Wushishi and the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Legbo Kutigi are members of the association.

'Why Some States are Not Viable' - The health programme in Niger State is one thing other states should copy. They have broken up the state into communities and wards and there is community involvement in the area of health, etc. We saw a clear vision on the part of the governor to take the state to a particular level in the next 10 years. Here also, we love the way fellow Nigerians are treated. Once you are in Niger State and you work there, you are treated like any other indigene of the state.

Aliyu mourns Tahir's demise -The Chiarman of the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) and governor of Niger state, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu (Talban Minna) has described as shocking the death of Dr. Ibrahim Tahir (Talban Bauchi).  Niger to spend N975m on ICT park - The Niger State Government is to spend N975 million on the construction of an ICT Park in Minna next year in its bid to boost the development of Information Technology.  Pilgrims board restates ban on pregnant women - The Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission has insisted that pregnant women will not be allowed to participate in this year’s pilgrimage to Israel.   He said the batch comprised 87 pilgrims from Niger State; 310 from Nasarawa State; and 12 Federal Government officials. The deputy governor disclosed that the state administration spent N422,000 on each pilgrim this year as against N394,000 last year. He advised them to justify the state government’s investment in the programme by performing the religious activities expected of them. He advised the intending 294 pilgrims against absconding and also urged them to be tolerant.

2010 Budget: Egos Send Tradition Packing - Early in the year, when a visiting European prime minister could not address a joint session of the National Assembly, it became manifest that perhaps, the battle line had been drawn. Before this however, was the famous Minna Retreat where the nation was treated to an open confrontation and display of the intensity to which the ego trip between both chambers had reached. In Minna, Niger State, an attempt to hold a retreat of the National Assembly Joint Committee on Constitution Review, (JCCR) was ditched by members of the House of Reps who insisted that the House's deputy speaker, Usman Bayero Nafada should be co-chairman with deputy Senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, chairman of the JCCR.

 Nigeria: Aliyu - Kill All Corrupt Officials - Abuja — It is time for Nigeria to adopt the Jerry Rawlings formula and the Chinese therapy of capital punishment in fighting corruption if it is to experience genuine growth and development, Niger State Governor Dr. Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu said in Abuja yesterday. Speaking at a Public Partnership Forum, the Governor said there is no half measure and Nigeria must be prepared to fight corruption in all its ramifications "as a matter of life and death." He said in order to succeed, "we must strengthen the legal frameworks of severely punishing all convicted corrupt officials, both in public and private so that corruption does not appear as a high-return and low risk activity, which is what our current court rulings portray, since convicted corrupt officials can go back to their loot after only a limited jail time in jail." He said Nigeria cannot continue to pay lip service to fighting corruption while the culprits move freely without remorse, adding that the country must also empower its anti-corruption agencies so as to eliminate from the system the popular feeling that "it is not that officials are corrupt but corruption is official." Governor Aliyu said it was the right forum to dwell on the issue of corruption because it has permeated all sectors with extensive government involvement in infrastructure projects, real estate development, government procurement and financial services.
